    Thanksgiving with Cancer

Food, family and gratitude are the staples of an American Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, cancer does not just go away after the awareness month celebrations and does not dissolve with holiday spirit. Those living with cancer are often silent about their own battles as they try to give their all to their family – they may struggle with a lack of energy, a compromised immune system, pain and constant fatigue, yet may still be expected to make the most of the holidays.

Whether the news of the illness is recent or has been part of previous holidays, it is especially important to adapt your experience to what is comfortable. Cancer may be discussed as much or as little as wanted, and those boundaries should be honored by loced ones. In terms of practicality, it is crucial to maintain basic precautions such as hand-washing and sanitizing. Fatigue may also be very real, so plan for downtime between activities and do not take on more than you know you can handle. Realize that your treatment can impact appetite as well as your taste buds; eat what tastes good to you and pass on the rest. Do not be a slave to fashion and make sure dress in comfortable layers that will allow you to adjust to your body’s shifting sense of hot and cold.

Even though the holidays paired with health issues can be a mentally charged time, try to give yourself permission to give your worries the day off. Do not hesitate to share laughter, hugs and even tears. Remember that continuing to live your life to the fullest is the reason you’re undergoing cancer treatment.

We wish you all a happy Thanksgiving!
