    Rare Disease Day 2025

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February to raise awareness about unusual medical conditions. Today is about promoting research, supporting patients and families, and making a difference where it’s most needed.

Rare diseases, including certain types of breast cancer, affect millions of people worldwide. Despite their collective impact, rare diseases often receive limited attention and resources, leading to delayed diagnoses, inadequate treatment, and social isolation. Rare breast cancer types often have distinct genetic or molecular profiles which can affect their behavior, growth, and response to treatment. Some rare breast cancers may also present with unusual symptoms, such as skin changes, nipple discharge, or pain, rather than the typical lump or mass.

Here are some of the lesser-known breast cancer types:

Inflammatory Breast Cancer: This aggressive type accounts for 1-5% of breast cancers in the US. It's often misdiagnosed as a breast infection due to its inflammatory symptoms

Angiosarcoma of the Breast: A rare and aggressive type that forms in the lining of blood or lymph vessels. It accounts for only 1-2% of all sarcomas.

Paget's Disease of the Breast: A rare type that develops in the skin of the nipple and areola, affecting 1-4% of patients with breast cancer.

Phyllodes Tumors: Rare tumors that grow in the connective tissue of the breast. While usually benign, about 25% of these tumors can be cancerous.

These breast cancer types often require specialized treatment approaches, which may involve a team of experts from various disciplines, such as medical oncology, surgical oncology, and radiation oncology. When it comes to monitoring breast health, it is essential to look beyond just lumps. Any changes to the skin, such as dimpling, puckering, or scaliness, can be a sign of a potential issue. Be aware of any unusual discharge, redness, or itching, particularly around the nipple area. By being mindful of these changes and bringing them to the attention of a healthcare provider, you can help ensure early detection and treatment.
